Activation projects are small initiatives aimed at promoting bilingualism in the city of Ottawa, carried out by non-profit organizations and private businesses. Grants awarded, valued at up to $10,000, support projects lasting six months (from November 2024 to May 2025). The Ottawa Bilingual Microgrant Program is part of the context of the official recognition of Ottawa's bilingual nature in 2017, following many years of mobilization by citizens and organizations.
In the Action Plan for Official Languages, one of the priorities identified by the Government of Canada is to support initiatives that promote the bilingual character of the national capital. Thus, the ACFO Ottawa received funding of $1.25 million from Canadian Heritage to establish a new microgrant program for the years 2019-2021, aiming to support the community, non-profit organizations, and businesses in Ottawa in creating new bilingualism projects. Given the considerable impact of these projects on the city, the Government of Canada has decided to grant extensions to continue this initiative.
